Justice Vasant Shamrao Deshpande, M.A., LL.B. (Nagpur), LL.M. (Standard). - Born, 27.6.1918. Educated at Holkar College, Indore, Canning College, Lucknow and University College of Law, Nagpur, Stood First in First Division in LL.B. in 1939 and in M.A. (History) in 1940 and was the first to pass the LL.M. Examination of the Nagpur University since its inception. Also was the only person to obtain the LL.M. degree of Standford University, U.S.A., at the International Law Seminar of Asian Government Lawyers Conference held there in 1957-58. Civil Judge and Magistrate First Class from 1941 to 1948. On selection by the Federal Public Service Commission to the Indian High Commissioner at Karachi in 1948-49. Additional District and Sessions Judge from 1949 to 1953. Worked with the Central Government in the Ministry of Law from 1953 onwards. Served as the Legal Adviser to the Indian High Commissioner in London from 1961 to 1964 and as joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Law from 1964 to 1968. Author of the book "Judicial Review of Legislation (1975)" and many articles in legal journals. Appointed Additional Judge on 30.4.1968. Appointed Permanent Judge on 14.10.1968. Appointed Chief Justice on 16.10.1978. Retired on 27.3.1980.
